The Value of a Skit... How we Learn! (Update for August 7th)

 Hello Church Family!

This Sunday is what we call a Summer Family Sunday. We worship as usual until we get to the sermon. The sermon is then presented in a skit format... this summer being based on the classic TV show "Home Improvement." Maybe some of you wonder why would we act out the sermon rather than just speak it. I may be working against myself here, but the truth is that we learn at a much higher level the more we interact with a topic. When we see things acted out in a way that seems relevant to our lives, the truth becomes less abstract and easier to retain and apply.

On the subject of learning, there have been many studies on how effectively we retain information. One such study stated that we retain 10% of what we simply hear (a sermon, for instance). We retain 20% of what we see and 30% of what we read. Add in a visual element where we both see and hear we retain 50% (Scripture on a screen). What if we have to say what we are learning (responsive reading)? That brings us to 70% retention. Adding in "doing" something with what you are learning (applying the truth to our lives), we are now up to 90%. And if you add singing (maybe even singing worship songs!) and you move to 95%! In short, the more senses we are using in the process of learning, the more we retain. Interesting, isn't it?

So come join Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, along with Jill, the boys, Wilson, and Al for this four-part summer event, as we learn together to be a better family according to God's blueprint. These are fun skits, but they come with a point. What can we learn from the story? Invite your friends and plan to attend this uniquely Emmett Nazarene event!
