Causes for Worship (Update for Sunday, January 22nd)

 Hello Church Family!

If you were with us Sunday, this week we have been looking for opportunities to depend on God to love others. Have you taken advantage of God's help to find a way to love someone who isn't easy to love? Have you noticed a difference? Have you seen God move in your life?

This sermon series called Shape UP has been interesting to me. We have been looking at means of grace, looking at practices that Jesus taught His disciples to do, that help us better take advantage of the grace of God in our lives... those great gifts that He wants to give us. And the primary gift we have been talking about is His presence in our lives. Taking advantage of the fact that He is with us always.

This Sunday, we look at the means of grace which is worship. When we practice intentional times of worship, it makes sense that we better live into what God has for us. We remember better that He is with us. It is really good for our souls to think about this and to put it into practice.

So in preparation for Sunday, what makes you pause for worship? Have you ever been taken by surprise by something majestic, awe-inspiring? Are you in the habit of giving thanks in those moments? Of worshipping?

There was a song that became popular in the 1950s, when it was used often during the Billy Graham Crusades. Maybe you know it: How Great Thou Art. It was written by a pastor named Carl Boberg back in 1886. The song was inspired by a moment in creation.

According to the book 101 Hymn Stories, “His inspiration for this text is said to have come from a visit to a beautiful country estate on the southeast coast of Sweden. He was suddenly caught in a midday thunderstorm with awe-inspiring moments of flashing violence, followed by a clear brilliant sun. Soon afterwards he heard the calm, sweet songs of the birds in nearby trees. The experience prompted the pastor to fall to his knees in humble adoration of his mighty God.”

Moments of worship in these type moments usually come easier for us. But as you might expect, the means of grace in worship is to make it a practice, not just in these kinds of moments, but even in what might be considered mundane moments of life. There is still so much grace being thrown our way all the time. What might it take for us to begin noticing God at work more often so that we might respond in worship?
