Demonstrating Our Faith (Update for Sunday, January 15th)

Hello Church Family!

How have your conversations with God been going this week? Have you been sharing life with God? I hope so... but it's not too late to start!

I had an interesting conversation this morning in my DIY group. For those who don't know, a DIY (Do It Yourself) Group is simply a smaller small group. It is a small group of friends who get together regularly to share life and encourage each in their journey with God through life.

In the group today, James had to come up with the question of the day, and I thought it was a good one. How do I demonstrate my faith? In other words, how do I make my faith in God visible? There were some good answers. Praying before meals, even at restaurants. Reading the Bible. Praying. Acting as if you have hope. On and on and on. In fact, if you want to participate in our discussion, feel free to enter a comment at the bottom of this blog post.

What James might not have known is that his question ties into our sermon topic for Sunday. In this latest series, we have been looking at means of grace... things we can do to grow in the grace of God. And this Sunday, we encounter a time when Jesus says, "Be careful not to practice your righteousness...." and he goes on to explain how not to do it.

Now this might not sound like a big deal to you, but the three words that caught my attention were: practice your righteousness. In this statement, Jesus is assuming we are practicing our righteousness... practicing rightness. Do you ever practice doing the right thing? As if it is a free throw in basketball where you shoot and shoot and shoot with the hopes of trying to swish it every time... trying to make it second nature? (Yes, it's basketball season)

This Sunday, we look at the means of grace which is acts of righteousness. Much like prayer, there is a right way and a wrong way to do right things. We are going to look at what the Bible says about doing them right and doing them wrong. And it just might surprise you! What might God have to say to you about this?

This is also Local Care Offering Sunday. This is simply an offering that goes to a fund to help those in our church family that we have found need some help. If you would like to give to this, please mark your offering clearly, whether you are giving online or in person, so we can get it to the right spot.

  1. Live a Matthew 5:16 life

  2. I would say that living by example can show your faith. If you live righteous on Sundays, but still participate in ungodly practices during the week, then people don't see your faith outside of church.
